Chicken and Bisquick Dumplings (+Video)

This Easy Chicken and Drop Dumplings recipe is full of flavor and can be made in about 30 minutes. A creamy broth, tender chicken and fluffy dumplings!

AN EASY, CREAMY ONE POT MEAL

Chicken and Bisquick dumplings is a classic comfort food dish made with diced chicken, vegetables, and a savory broth, topped with tender dumplings made from Bisquick baking mix. The dumplings are dropped by spoonfuls into the pot and cooked until they are puffy and cooked through. Serve with a side salad and some biscuits!

What is Bisquick?

Bisquick is simply a pre-made baking mix of flour, shortening, salt, sugar and baking powder. There are several large brands that can also be used here. Just make sure it has the same ingredients listed as the Bisquick baking mix.

What can I substitute for chicken tenders?

You can use some rotisserie chicken in this which gives it a wonderful flavor or if you have leftovers from a roasted chicken. Chicken breasts or chicken thighs can also be used.

How do you store leftover chicken and dumplings?

Chicken and Dumplings don’t always make the best leftovers. The dumplings will continue to absorb the liquid so when you make this, be sure you’re going to eat it all the same day.

Can you freeze chicken and dumplings?

Just like storing leftovers, it is not recommended to freeze chicken and dumplings as the dumplings will continue to soak up the surrounding liquid and will become dense and thick and no longer fluffy.

Can I make homemade dumplings?

Yes. You’ll need:
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons of baking powder
¾ cups of milk
⅓ cup vegetable oil
½ teaspoon salt
Make the dumplings by mixing the flour with the baking powder and salt in a mixing bowl, then stir in the milk and oil until it forms a sticky dough. Continue with the rest of the recipe as written.

Can Chicken and Bisquick Dumplings be made in the slow cooker?

Yes. Add all the ingredients to a 5 quart slow cooker (except for the Bisquick and milk) and cook on low for 4-6 hours until the chicken is cooked. Then mix together Bisquick and milk then drop by tablespoonfuls into the slow cooker and cover. Cook for an additional 30-60 minutes (or until dumplings are cooked through and no longer doughy.

  • chicken tenders

  • chicken stock or broth
  • milk (or half & half)
  • chicken gravy mix (see note below)
  • frozen peas and carrots
  • salt and pepper
  • Bisquick baking mix
  • warm water
  • dried parsley (optional)

Note: For a creamier chicken and dumplings, use a can of cream of chicken soup instead of the chicken gravy packet. All the other ingredient measurements remain the same.

HOW TO MAKE CHICKEN AND BISQUICK DUMPLINGS:

Place a large pot on the stove over medium high heat, add chicken broth, diced onion and diced chicken tenders. Cook until the onions turn soft and the chicken is cooked. Season mixture with salt and pepper.

In a small bowl, whisk together gravy mix (or cream of chicken soup) and milk. Pour into pot.

Stir and bring up to a boil (to thicken slightly.) Add frozen peas and carrots.

In a medium bowl, combine Bisquick with warm water. Stir until combined.
